One of the biggest myths about cancer treatment is that patients are passive participants.

In reality, those who actively support their bodies often tolerate therapy better and recover more efficiently. As an oncologist, I focus on three evidence-based areas before treatment begins.

1. Correct Nutritional Deficiencies Early

Many patients enter treatment already low in key nutrients, especially vitamin D and B-vitamins, which affect:

  • immune regulation
  • cellular repair
  • energy metabolism

Correcting deficiencies before treatment can reduce fatigue, improve recovery, and strengthen the body’s resilience. SafeVite is designed for oncology-informed nutrient support, providing essential vitamins safely while avoiding compounds that may interfere with therapy.

2. Stabilize Your Sleep Rhythm

Sleep is not just rest — it is biologic repair.

During sleep, the body regulates:

  • inflammatory pathways
  • hormone balance
  • immune signaling

Even small adjustments, like consistent bedtimes and morning light exposure, can improve physiologic stability and reduce treatment-related fatigue.

3. Support Digestive Function Before Therapy

Cancer therapy often affects the gastrointestinal system. Preparing digestion ahead of time may help:

  • improve nutrient absorption
  • reduce nausea severity
  • stabilize appetite

Gentle digestive support strategies and products like 4Digestion can provide targeted support to minimize discomfort.

Why Expert Guidance Matters

Cancer wellness advice online is often conflicting or outdated. Evidence-based guidance from oncology professionals ensures that strategies are safe, clinically appropriate, and personalized to patient needs.

Get Ongoing Support Designed for You

Learning about cancer wellness is a powerful first step. But real progress comes from having the right guidance, at the right time, tailored to your needs.

First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt support to each of you embarking on this cancer journey. I understand that the road ahead may seem daunting, but remember, you are not alone.

As an oncology nurse, I have observed the overwhelming nature of a cancer diagnosis. Amidst the uncertainty, there’s potential to embark on a journey of strength, resilience, and hope. For cancer wellness, here are some insights and support that might help navigate this path.

Embracing Wellness Amidst the Challenge

For cancer wellness, nurturing your body and mind is vital—both physically, emotionally and spiritually. While treatments and medical advice will be an integral part of your routine, taking care of yourself beyond medication and treatment is equally important.

Tips For Cancer Wellness:

  1. Nourish Your Body: Eating well-balanced meals and staying hydrated are vital. Consider incorporating fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your diet. If you choose to also take any dietary supplements, it is CRITICAL you discuss this with your cancer doctor and choose the most appropriate supplement.
  2. Stay Active: Listen to your body, and engage in light physical activities if possible. Even a short walk or gentle yoga session can do wonders for your mood and energy levels.
  3. Prioritize Mental Health: Take moments to breathe, meditate, or indulge in activities that bring you peace and offer hope. Your mental and emotional well-being are just as crucial as your physical health.
  4. Lean on Your Support System: Whether it’s friends, family, or a support group, having a network of people who care about you can provide immense strength and comfort.  Seek available resources at your cancer center.

Should you consider at multivitamin, think about and discuss with your doctor SafeVite: Your Daily Companion

Daily Multivitamins Boost Memory in Elderly https://www.4cancerwellness.com/2023/07/10/daily-multivitamins-boost-memory-in-elderly/ Mon, 10 Jul 2023 16:59:23 +0000 https://www.4cancerwellness.com/?p=10929 The post Daily Multivitamins Boost Memory in Elderly appeared first on 4CancerWellness.

Elderly patients are at risk of vitamin deficiencies due to several reasons, especially those with cancer diagnosis.

Recent study, COSMOS (Cocoa Supplement and Multivitamins Outcome Stud) has shown that multivitamin supplements improved memory and slowed age-related cognitive decline in elderly who are above 65 years of age. There were 3562 older adults included in the study. However, a challenging part is which multivitamin to take. In this study, over-the-counter “Centrum Silver” was given, and the most benefit was observed in patients with cardiovascular disease. It is not known how many patients with cancer diagnoses were in the study. It is very likely that patients with a cancer diagnosis may derive similar benefits from multivitamin supplements.

Multivitamin supplementation is a safe approach to help protect cognitive health in the elderly

Overall, the above studies suggested that multivitamin supplementation is a safe approach to help protect cognitive health in elderly. Further research is needed to understand who is most likely to benefit and the underlying mechanisms involved. The 4Cancerwellness team has developed a multivitamin which also has some of the same ingredients while avoiding vitamins which could interfere with cancer treatments.  If you would like to learn more, click here.

An appropriate all-natural multivitamin

SafeVite, is a multivitamin supplement which has all the ingredients that could help with memory improvement and slowing cognitive decline while avoiding the vitamins which can interfere with cancer treatments and potentially the outcomes. It is an affordable supplement which is designed by oncology experts, specifically for those who are affected by cancer.

Daily Multivitamin Supporting Wellness during & after cancer treatment

SafeVite is oncologist approved!

Developed by oncologists and oncology pharmacists to provide vitamins while minimizing interference with cancer treatments.

Cancer patients often take supplements unaware of the risks and possible negative outcomes. SafeVite addresses these concerns.

Using the most current references and studies, our research team has focused on vitamins that can be safely recommended for all cancer patients.

  • The US Preventative Services Task Force recommends against the use of Beta-Carotene or Vitamin E supplements for the prevention of cancer. SafeVite avoids these vitamins.
  • Vitamin D deficiency is all too frequent and considered one of the most important vitamins in those diagnosed with cancer.
  • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) deficiency can occur in cancer patients. B6 supports healthy nerves and can assist with relieving nausea.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency is frequent in cancer patients (specifically older individuals, those who are overweight, and those with diabetes).
  • 3 out of 4 cancer patients at some point will have significantly elevated calcium. It is best to avoid calcium supplementation unless recommended by your doctor.
  • Certain vitamins, like Vitamin C, have been shown to interfere with cancer treatment. SafeVite avoids these vitamins.

The Crucial Role of Wellness in Cancer Care: A Comprehensive Perspective https://www.4cancerwellness.com/2023/06/27/crucial-role-of-wellness-in-cancer-care/ Tue, 27 Jun 2023 16:00:18 +0000 https://www.4cancerwellness.com/?p=10868 The post The Crucial Role of Wellness in Cancer Care: A Comprehensive Perspective appeared first on 4CancerWellness.

As an oncologist with years of experience, I have witnessed firsthand the impact of cancer on individuals and their loved ones. Cancer is a complex disease that not only affects physical health but also takes a toll on emotional and mental well-being. In the pursuit of combating cancer, it is imperative that we emphasize the significance of wellness. Integrating wellness into cancer care not only enhances the overall quality of life but also complements medical treatments, leading to better outcomes and empowering patients on their journey toward recovery.

In this blog, we will explore the profound importance of wellness in the context of cancer care.

Holistic Approach to Care:

The concept of wellness encompasses more than just physical health. It encompasses a holistic approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. In cancer care, this holistic approach becomes even more vital. By addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of patients, we create an environment that fosters healing and resilience.

At 4CancerWellness, a holistic approach is at the foundation of our company. We call it our 4Cornerstones: Activity, Nutrition, Mindset, & Support

Physical Well-being:

Maintaining physical health during cancer treatment can be challenging due to the side effects of treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. However, incorporating strategies to promote physical well-being is crucial. Regular exercise, tailored to an individual’s capabilities, can help reduce treatment-related side effects, improve energy levels, and boost overall endurance. A balanced diet, rich in essential nutrients, supports the body’s healing process and helps combat treatment-related weight loss or gain. Adequate rest and sleep are essential for the body to recover and regenerate.

To emphasize, maintaining a healthy weight through proper nutrition and activity is crucial for cancer patients. Significant weight loss can have a significant impact on treatment effectiveness, treatment tolerance, and quality of life.  Obesity is a risk factor for cancer recurrence and/or a risk for developing other types of cancer. By working with healthcare professionals, patients can receive guidance on achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, promoting better treatment outcomes, and reducing the risk of cancer recurrence.

Nutritional Wellness:

Proper nutrition plays a pivotal role in supporting the body’s ability to heal and recover during treatment. Cancer treatments can sometimes cause appetite loss, taste changes, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing, making it challenging for patients to meet their nutritional needs. However, by working closely with an oncology dietitian, patients can receive personalized dietary recommendations to help manage treatment side effects and maintain optimal nutrition.

A balanced plant-focused diet rich in nutrients, including lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats – and avoiding processed foods and sugars – provides the necessary fuel for the body’s immune system, aiding in its ability to fight against cancer and minimize treatment-related complications. In some cases, specific dietary modifications may be recommended to address specific treatment side effects, such as incorporating high-fiber foods to manage constipation or consuming a softer diet to improve nutritional intake when experiencing a sore throat.

Emotional and Mental Well-being:

The emotional and mental well-being of cancer patients often gets overlooked, but it plays a fundamental role in their overall wellness. Cancer diagnosis and treatment can trigger a range of emotions, including fear, anxiety, depression, and uncertainty. It is essential to provide a supportive environment that addresses these emotional challenges. Incorporating counseling, support groups, and psychotherapy can help patients navigate their emotional journey, cope with stress, and build resilience.

Spiritual and Mind-Body Connection:

Nurturing the spiritual aspect of wellness can have a profound impact on patients’ coping mechanisms and overall well-being. Engaging in activities such as meditation, mindfulness, or connecting with one’s faith can provide solace, inner strength, and a sense of purpose. The mind-body connection should not be underestimated. Techniques like yoga, tai chi, and deep breathing exercises can help reduce stress, improve relaxation, and enhance overall mental and physical well-being.

Quality of Life and Survivorship:

Cancer care should aim not only to treat the disease but also to optimize patients’ quality of life during and after treatment. Integrating wellness strategies throughout the cancer care continuum contributes to enhancing the overall patient experience. Promoting wellness not only helps patients manage treatment-related side effects but also empowers them to actively participate in their care, fostering a sense of control and hope. Additionally, addressing survivorship concerns by promoting ongoing wellness practices supports patients in their transition from active treatment to a new chapter of life.

Collaboration with a Multidisciplinary Team:

The incorporation of wellness strategies in cancer care requires a collaborative effort. Oncologists, nurses, psychologists, dietitians, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals work together to provide comprehensive patient support. By integrating wellness into cancer care, we create a team-based approach that addresses the diverse needs of each patient.

Wellness should be an integral component of cancer care, as it profoundly impacts patients’ physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. By adopting a holistic approach to cancer treatment, we can improve outcomes, enhance quality of life, and empower patients on their journey toward recovery. Through the integration of physical health, emotional support, and spiritual connection, we can truly provide comprehensive care to individuals fighting cancer. Let us recognize the importance of wellness and work together to make it an essential part of cancer care across the globe!

As an oncologist, I have seen many patients who are looking for ways to support their cancer treatment with the use of supplements. While some supplements may provide benefits, it’s crucial to understand that not all supplements are created equal, and some may even interfere with your cancer treatment. In this article, I will discuss the importance of appropriate cancer supplements and provide some resources to help you make informed decisions.

Firstly, it’s essential to understand that supplements are not a substitute for cancer treatment. While some supplements may provide benefits, they cannot replace standard cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. It’s also important to be aware that newer treatments carry a lot less toxicity by targeting cancer rather than the individual or focus on the immune system, relying on an individual to kill the cancer instead of drugs.  Regardless, it’s important to discuss any supplements you are taking or considering with your healthcare provider before incorporating them into your treatment plan.

Secondly, it’s crucial to understand that not all supplements are safe for cancer patients. Some supplements may interact with cancer treatments and cause adverse effects. For example, some supplements may interfere with the effectiveness of chemotherapy, while others may increase the risk of bleeding during surgery. Again, please discuss any supplements you are taking or considering with your healthcare provider.

Thirdly, it’s essential to choose supplements that are backed by research and have been shown to provide benefits for cancer patients. Some supplements may provide benefits such as reducing inflammation, supporting immune function, and improving quality of life. However, it’s important to choose supplements that have been studied in clinical trials and have been shown to be safe and effective.

Here are some resources to help you make informed decisions about cancer supplements:

1) The National Cancer Institute‘s Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine (OCCAM) provides information and resources about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for cancer patients, including information about supplements.

2) The American Cancer Society provides information about CAM and cancer, including information about supplements and how they may interact with cancer treatment.

3) The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s About Herbs database provides evidence-based information about herbs, botanicals, and supplements commonly used by cancer patients.

4) The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) provides information about CAM and cancer, including information about supplements and how they may interact with cancer treatment.

5) The Cancer Treatment Centers of America provides information about supplements commonly used by cancer patients, including potential benefits, risks, and interactions with cancer treatment.

6) The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) offers information about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for cancer patients, including information about supplements.

7) The National Institute of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements provides information about dietary supplements, including potential benefits, risks, and interactions with cancer treatment.

8) The Society for Integrative Oncology offers resources and information about integrative oncology, including the use of supplements and other complementary therapies.

9) The Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians offers information about naturopathic medicine and cancer, including information about supplements commonly used by cancer patients.

10) The Integrative Medicine Program at the University of Michigan offers information about integrative medicine and cancer, including information about supplements and other complementary therapies.

It’s important to note that these concerns are not exhaustive, and each patient may have unique questions and needs. Therefore, it’s essential to have open and honest communication with healthcare professionals to address specific concerns and develop a personalized care plan.

By consulting reliable resources and discussing any supplements you are taking or considering with your healthcare provider, you can make informed decisions about how to support your cancer treatment and improve your quality of life. Remember that supplements are not a substitute for cancer treatment, and it’s essential to work with your healthcare team to develop a personalized treatment plan that meets your unique needs and circumstances.

The post Cancer Nutrition Tips for a Healthy Holiday appeared first on 4CancerWellness.

The holidays are an enjoyable season for spending time with family and friends.  Eating healthy during this time can be challenging but try to stay on track!

Tips that will help you make nutritious choices:

1. Don’t skip meals.

Skipping meals to save calories for the “big” meal will not be beneficial in the long run.  By skipping meals, you are more likely to overeat and snack because of being ravenous.   Eat smaller meals than usual or have healthy snacks to keep your appetite curbed.

2. Make a dish.

If you are unsure what foods at the meal will be suitable for your meal plan, offer to bring a dish that you will enjoy as will others.

3. Cheat a little.

It isn’t really “cheating” it is enjoying life.  Choose what special holiday items you want to enjoy and stick to your list and limit the serving size.   No food needs to be on the naughty list.

4. Don’t forget the fruits and vegetables.

Continue to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables at your holiday meals.

5. Watch the drinks.

Sugary drinks such as pop, punch, sweet tea contribute calories to your diet without nutrition.  Choose water or unsweetened beverages.  Alcohol can also increase your calorie intake – especially sweet mixed drinks.  If you choose to drink alcohol, drink in moderation 1 drink/day for women and 2 drinks/day for men.

6. Focus on family/friends.

Not all holiday gatherings need to be centered around food.  Plan an activity to do together instead.

7. Don’t overeat.

Eat slowly, put your fork down between bites, drink plenty of water, stop eating before you are stuffed.

8. Don’t feel guilty.

If you made poor choices or overate at the holiday meal, it’s okay. Start right back with your next meal and increase your activity.

How to save some calories at the Holiday meal:

  • Skip the gravy on the turkey and potatoes.
  • Don’t butter items that may have already been buttered such as corn or green beans.
  • If choosing a sweet dessert, then cut back on bread and potatoes.
  • Have apple or pumpkin pie instead of pecan pie.
  • Take standard portions, don’t overfill your plate. There will be leftovers to eat at another meal.
  • Start your plate off with vegetables.
  • Water is your best drink.
  • Skip the cheese platter.

Incorporating the Mediterranean Diet into the Holidays:

1. Serve Mediterranean Dips.

Instead of heavy cheese dips rich in saturated fats start with some equally delicious Mediterranean dips. The yogurt based garlic dip tzatziki,  these easy recipes are rich in antioxidants and the good fats and they can be made the day before. Accompany them with some thin breadsticks or veggies.

Tzatziki Dip

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces full fat Greek yogurt
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • Salt
  • 1-2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium cucumber (5-6 inches)
  • Fresh dill

Instructions

  1. Crush the garlic with a little bit of salt and pepper.
  2. Peel the cucumber and grate. Squeeze well to get rid of water.
  3. Whip the yogurt in a bowl and then add the garlic paste, mixing well and then add the cucumber and mix again.
  4. Start adding small amounts of olive oil alternating with the vinegar while mixing.
  5. Add about 2 teaspoons fresh dill and mix well.
  6. Let it sit at least an hour in the refrigerator before serving.

2. Cook with Olive Oil and Greek Yogurt.

Use olive oil and Greek style yogurt for your cooking. When making mashed (regular or sweet) potatoes use olive oil and Greek style yogurt instead of butter and cream.

3. Add a Large Salad.

While there are plenty of side dishes during holiday dinners, most of them cooked and starchy. Add a large salad using seasonal vegetables for a fresh taste and choose a light dressing.

4. Choose Fruit for Dessert.

Yes, you still need to serve traditional dessert such as cookies and pie but add a fruit platter as well.

How to be involved in the Holiday plans without putting your health at risk:

Don’t feel pressured to continue traditions if you are not feeling well or are struggling with fatigue.

Party Planning.

Choose what gatherings are the most meaningful to you and attend those.

If you usually host a holiday gathering but are not up to it, share the work with others.  Ask everyone to bring a dish or ask someone else to host.

If invited to a gathering but are struggling with side effects of cancer treatment such as nausea, taste changes, and diarrhea, ask the host what food is planned for the meal.  If you are concerned about not being to eat or not tolerating the meal- maybe you can come later for some socializing.

Ask the host if they mind if you bring a few dishes that you can eat with the side effects you are experiencing.

Eat at home throughout the day of the holiday gathering.  Keep your side effects controlled.

Communicate with your medical team. Check your calendar to see what treatments or appointments you have during the holiday season. You may find that your health care professionals will try to work with your treatment schedule to facilitate your holiday plans. Informing your doctor about holiday plans can also help provide guidance and support in managing side effects appropriately.

Day of the Party.

Dish your own plate to choose foods that are tolerated and portions that are appropriate.

If your stomach is upset or sensitive, choose plain foods.  Avoid eating heavy cream sauces, gravy, mayonnaise-based foods.  Try some plain meat, vegetables, bread, or potatoes.

If the smell of food is bothering you, try to stay out of the kitchen while food is being prepares, open window or eat outside if possible.   Hot foods give off more smell, let the food cool a bit so the steam doesn’t go into your face.

Be aware of food safety if you have a compromised immune system.  If the food is being served in a buffet style, try to go through the line first.  Don’t eat hot/cold foods that have been sitting out.  Foods kept out of safe temperatures could cause food-borne illness.

It is a good idea to always avoid sushi, deviled eggs, mayonnaise-based salads, and homemade eggnog.  Don’t eat out of bowls of snacks/chips where many hands have been.

Be cautious with meal offerings coming from outside the home and make sure you trust where they are coming from.

We hope you found this helpful. Happy Holidays & be sure to follow @4CancerWellness on social media for more tips!

The Overall Importance of Activity: Why Maintaining a Minimum Bodily Range of Motion Can Keep You Healthy https://www.4cancerwellness.com/2022/11/08/the-overall-importance-of-activity/ Tue, 08 Nov 2022 22:18:18 +0000 https://www.4cancerwellness.com/?p=4477 The post The Overall Importance of Activity: Why Maintaining a Minimum Bodily Range of Motion Can Keep You Healthy appeared first on 4CancerWellness.

“Every system in your body relies on physical activity”, says an article written by the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Did you know, staying active on a daily basis will not only make you feel better, but it will also allow you to do better?

Activity is simply the act of allowing our body to function properly, which of course, includes all of the complicated systems that make up our bodies.

An article titled, Physical Activity, published by the World Health Organization (WHO), says, “Regular physical activity is proven to help prevent AND manage noncommunicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and several cancers. It also helps prevent hypertension, maintain healthy body weight and can improve mental health, quality of life, and well-being.”

With that being said, maybe you have heard something along those lines before. Maybe, you have even given exercise a try but just didn’t seem to get those great results that are oftentimes read about. If this is the case, you are not alone.

It is extremely difficult to receive every benefit of physical activity until you fully understand WHAT changes activity will make on the body/mind and HOW these changes in the body/mind are so beneficial.

Basically, it all comes down to four words and two concepts, Flexibility and Range of Motion (ROM).

What is Range of Motion?

ROM is the measurement of the amount of movement around a specific joint or body part. Often taken by a physical therapist, he/she uses a device, called a goniometer, that calculates the angular distance of different bodily/joint movements. These measurements can be recorded passively, active-assisted, and/or actively.

  • Passive – occurs around a joint you are not using your muscles to move.
  • Active-assisted – occurs when you move your own body part, but assistance is required to ensure injury/damage does not occur. Mainly used during therapy for an injury, or on someone elderly.
  • Active – occurs when you use your muscles to move the specific joint/body part without any assistance.

What is Flexibility?

Flexibility is the ability of a joint or series of joints to move through an unrestricted/unassisted, pain-free range of motion. In other words, flexibility is the actively recorded version of the ROM measurement process and improved flexibility is the ultimate goal when increasing our Range of Motion.

“Although flexibility inevitably will widely vary from person to person, a minimum range of motion is necessary for one to maintain joint and total body health.” Flexibility, by UC Davis Sports Medicine.

How Do We Lose Our Flexibility/Range of Motion Over Time?

This question can simply be answered by a short phrase I found in an article titled Maintaining Flexibility With Aging, written by Victoria Bowen, PT, DPT, “Use It or Lose It”.

As our society continues to advance technologically, our lives have become increasingly more sedentary, mainly due to motorized transport and high hours of screen time required by most jobs. In fact, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), levels of inactivity are twice as high in high-income countries compared to low-income countries.

WHO recommends any adult aged 18-64 should do at least 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, or 75-150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week. Along with 2 muscle-strengthening activities at a moderate or greater intensity that involve all major muscle groups per week.

Keep in mind, these recommendations are only minimums, The WHO suggests anybody may increase these durations/frequencies for additional health benefits. But, most importantly, one should limit the time spent being sedentary and replace this time with physical activity as our health desperately depends on it.

What Are The Negative Effects Of Inflexibility/Limited ROM?

Physical inactivity, which leads to inflexible/limited muscles, is the leading risk factor for mortality in noncommunicable diseases. In fact, people who are insufficiently active have a 20-30% increased risk of death compared to people who exercise regularly.

In children, a lack of physical activity can lead to physical problems (i.e. cardiovascular, muscular, blood pressure, bone health, etc.), cognitive outcomes (academic performance/executive function), mental health (depression/anxiety), etc.

The biggest negative effect from inactivity most people don’t understand is directly related to mental health.

How to Regain/Increase Our Activity/Flexibility/ROM?

The first step in preventing our loss of flexibility/ROM is committing to an active lifestyle. There are so many tools available to help reach our goals, but not one of them will work until we decide this is something we want to do.

The second step is getting active! Consistency is the ultimate key, and here are a few tips provided by the CDC that may help one’s accountability in being consistent:

  1. Get the support of your friends and family-and invite them to get active with you!
  2. Start slowly and add time, frequency, or intensity every week.
  3. Schedule physical activity for times in the day or week when you’re most energetic.
  4. Plan ahead. Make physical activity part of your daily or weekly schedule.
  5. Walk instead of drive to nearby destinations, or park the car farther away and fit in a walk to your destination.
  6. Support improvements in your neighborhood that make it easier to walk or bike to where you want to go.

What Is the Minimum ROM We Must Maintain To Remain Healthy?

We should be able to move the joints in our bodies in different directions, so we can accomplish various basic tasks in our lives. This ability to move is also essential for us to stay healthy.

The four different joint movements include:

  1. Extension – Straightening a joint
  2. Flexion – Bending a joint
  3. Abduction – Movement away from the center of your body
  4. Adduction – Movement back to the center of the body

The two different joint types include:

  1. Ball-and-Socket Joint – like your shoulders, are able to move in many different directions
  2. Hinge Joint – like your knees/elbows, are designed to close and open in one direction.

Commonly used ROM measurements can be found anywhere and are used to measure, in units of degrees, how much range of motion a particular joint possesses.
