One of the biggest myths about cancer treatment is that patients are passive participants.

In reality, those who actively support their bodies often tolerate therapy better and recover more efficiently. As an oncologist, I focus on three evidence-based areas before treatment begins.

1. Correct Nutritional Deficiencies Early

Many patients enter treatment already low in key nutrients, especially vitamin D and B-vitamins, which affect:

 • immune regulation
 • cellular repair
 • energy metabolism

Correcting deficiencies before treatment can reduce fatigue, improve recovery, and strengthen the body’s resilience. SafeVite is designed for oncology-informed nutrient support, providing essential vitamins safely while avoiding compounds that may interfere with therapy.

2. Stabilize Your Sleep Rhythm

Sleep is not just rest — it is biologic repair.

During sleep, the body regulates:

 • inflammatory pathways
 • hormone balance
 • immune signaling

Even small adjustments, like consistent bedtimes and morning light exposure, can improve physiologic stability and reduce treatment-related fatigue.

3. Support Digestive Function Before Therapy

Cancer therapy often affects the gastrointestinal system. Preparing digestion ahead of time may help:

 • improve nutrient absorption
 • reduce nausea severity
 • stabilize appetite

Gentle digestive support strategies and products like 4Digestion can provide targeted support to minimize discomfort.

Why Expert Guidance Matters

Cancer wellness advice online is often conflicting or outdated. Evidence-based guidance from oncology professionals ensures that strategies are safe, clinically appropriate, and personalized to patient needs.

First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt support to each of you embarking on this cancer journey. I understand that the road ahead may seem daunting, but remember, you are not alone.

As an oncology nurse, I have observed the overwhelming nature of a cancer diagnosis. Amidst the uncertainty, there’s potential to embark on a journey of strength, resilience, and hope. For cancer wellness, here are some insights and support that might help navigate this path.

Embracing Wellness Amidst the Challenge

For cancer wellness, nurturing your body and mind is vital—both physically, emotionally and spiritually. While treatments and medical advice will be an integral part of your routine, taking care of yourself beyond medication and treatment is equally important.

Tips For Cancer Wellness:

 1. Nourish Your Body: Eating well-balanced meals and staying hydrated are vital. Consider incorporating fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your diet. If you choose to also take any dietary supplements, it is CRITICAL you discuss this with your cancer doctor and choose the most appropriate supplement.
 2. Stay Active: Listen to your body, and engage in light physical activities if possible. Even a short walk or gentle yoga session can do wonders for your mood and energy levels.
 3. Prioritize Mental Health: Take moments to breathe, meditate, or indulge in activities that bring you peace and offer hope. Your mental and emotional well-being are just as crucial as your physical health.
 4. Lean on Your Support System: Whether it’s friends, family, or a support group, having a network of people who care about you can provide immense strength and comfort. Seek available resources at your cancer center.

Should you consider at multivitamin, think about and discuss with your doctor SafeVite: Your Daily Companion

Elderly patients are at risk of vitamin deficiencies due to several reasons, especially those with cancer diagnosis.

Recent study, COSMOS (Cocoa Supplement and Multivitamins Outcome Stud) has shown that multivitamin supplements improved memory and slowed age-related cognitive decline in elderly who are above 65 years of age. There were 3562 older adults included in the study. However, a challenging part is which multivitamin to take. In this study, over-the-counter “Centrum Silver” was given, and the most benefit was observed in patients with cardiovascular disease. It is not known how many patients with cancer diagnoses were in the study. It is very likely that patients with a cancer diagnosis may derive similar benefits from multivitamin supplements.

Multivitamin supplementation is a safe approach to help protect cognitive health in the elderly

Overall, the above studies suggested that multivitamin supplementation is a safe approach to help protect cognitive health in elderly. Further research is needed to understand who is most likely to benefit and the underlying mechanisms involved. The 4Cancerwellness team has developed a multivitamin which also has some of the same ingredients while avoiding vitamins which could interfere with cancer treatments. If you would like to learn more, click here.

An appropriate all-natural multivitamin

SafeVite, is a multivitamin supplement which has all the ingredients that could help with memory improvement and slowing cognitive decline while avoiding the vitamins which can interfere with cancer treatments and potentially the outcomes. It is an affordable supplement which is designed by oncology experts, specifically for those who are affected by cancer.

Daily Multivitamin Supporting Wellness during & after cancer treatment

SafeVite is oncologist approved!

Developed by oncologists and oncology pharmacists to provide vitamins while minimizing interference with cancer treatments.

Cancer patients often take supplements unaware of the risks and possible negative outcomes. SafeVite addresses these concerns.

Using the most current references and studies, our research team has focused on vitamins that can be safely recommended for all cancer patients.

 • The US Preventative Services Task Force recommends against the use of Beta-Carotene or Vitamin E supplements for the prevention of cancer. SafeVite avoids these vitamins.
 • Vitamin D deficiency is all too frequent and considered one of the most important vitamins in those diagnosed with cancer.
 • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) deficiency can occur in cancer patients. B6 supports healthy nerves and can assist with relieving nausea.
 • Vitamin B12 deficiency is frequent in cancer patients (specifically older individuals, those who are overweight, and those with diabetes).
 • 3 out of 4 cancer patients at some point will have significantly elevated calcium. It is best to avoid calcium supplementation unless recommended by your doctor.
 • Certain vitamins, like Vitamin C, have been shown to interfere with cancer treatment. SafeVite avoids these vitamins.

As an oncologist, I have seen many patients who are looking for ways to support their cancer treatment with the use of supplements. While some supplements may provide benefits, it’s crucial to understand that not all supplements are created equal, and some may even interfere with your cancer treatment. In this article, I will discuss the importance of appropriate cancer supplements and provide some resources to help you make informed decisions.

Firstly, it’s essential to understand that supplements are not a substitute for cancer treatment. While some supplements may provide benefits, they cannot replace standard cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. It’s also important to be aware that newer treatments carry a lot less toxicity by targeting cancer rather than the individual or focus on the immune system, relying on an individual to kill the cancer instead of drugs. Regardless, it’s important to discuss any supplements you are taking or considering with your healthcare provider before incorporating them into your treatment plan.

Secondly, it’s crucial to understand that not all supplements are safe for cancer patients. Some supplements may interact with cancer treatments and cause adverse effects. For example, some supplements may interfere with the effectiveness of chemotherapy, while others may increase the risk of bleeding during surgery. Again, please discuss any supplements you are taking or considering with your healthcare provider.

Thirdly, it’s essential to choose supplements that are backed by research and have been shown to provide benefits for cancer patients. Some supplements may provide benefits such as reducing inflammation, supporting immune function, and improving quality of life. However, it’s important to choose supplements that have been studied in clinical trials and have been shown to be safe and effective.

Here are some resources to help you make informed decisions about cancer supplements:

1) The National Cancer Institute‘s Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine (OCCAM) provides information and resources about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for cancer patients, including information about supplements.

2) The American Cancer Society provides information about CAM and cancer, including information about supplements and how they may interact with cancer treatment.

3) The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s About Herbs database provides evidence-based information about herbs, botanicals, and supplements commonly used by cancer patients.

4) The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) provides information about CAM and cancer, including information about supplements and how they may interact with cancer treatment.

5) The Cancer Treatment Centers of America provides information about supplements commonly used by cancer patients, including potential benefits, risks, and interactions with cancer treatment.

6) The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) offers information about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for cancer patients, including information about supplements.

7) The National Institute of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements provides information about dietary supplements, including potential benefits, risks, and interactions with cancer treatment.

8) The Society for Integrative Oncology offers resources and information about integrative oncology, including the use of supplements and other complementary therapies.

9) The Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians offers information about naturopathic medicine and cancer, including information about supplements commonly used by cancer patients.

10) The Integrative Medicine Program at the University of Michigan offers information about integrative medicine and cancer, including information about supplements and other complementary therapies.

It’s important to note that these concerns are not exhaustive, and each patient may have unique questions and needs. Therefore, it’s essential to have open and honest communication with healthcare professionals to address specific concerns and develop a personalized care plan.

By consulting reliable resources and discussing any supplements you are taking or considering with your healthcare provider, you can make informed decisions about how to support your cancer treatment and improve your quality of life. Remember that supplements are not a substitute for cancer treatment, and it’s essential to work with your healthcare team to develop a personalized treatment plan that meets your unique needs and circumstances.

What Vitamins Should I Take During and After Cancer Treatment? https://www.4cancerwellness.com/2020/10/25/what-vitamins-should-i-take-during-and-after-cancer-treatment/ Sun, 25 Oct 2020 21:43:09 +0000 https://www.4cancerwellness.com/?p=713 The post What Vitamins Should I Take During and After Cancer Treatment? appeared first on 4CancerWellness.

]]>

Over the years, patients have frequently asked, “what vitamins should I take?” As cancer doctors, our first priority is to cure cancer and help patients understand their prognosis and treatment. But even if less critical, they should still have an answer to the vitamin question. As we looked into it further we just couldn’t find an appropriate answer or product, so we formed the SafeVite Research Team and got to work.

Over the last 4 years our findings have surprised us in that, although there is a tremendous body of evidence and prior studies regarding vitamins and cancer, it just hadn’t been put together in one logical product… until now. SafeVite has been formulated by our Research Team of Cancer Doctors, carefully considering which vitamins to include and in what doses, in an effort to maximize the benefit to patients in and after cancer treatment.

Some of the questions our Research Team has answered in formulating SafeVite:

 • There are certain vitamins to avoid during curative treatment
 • Treatment can lead to specific long-term vitamin deficiencies
 • Cancer patients run the risk of dangerously elevated vitamin levels
 • Cancer treatment can lead to long-term toxicities like hair thinning and nerve damage

And these are just a few examples.

We know the answer is not ‘more vitamins are better’ or just buying a multivitamin off the shelf, as they do not address the specific deficiencies, toxicities and conditions caused by cancer and/or cancer treatment as found in our research. The answer is SafeVite and it’s our goal that SafeVite supports your body’s vitamin needs as you continue your fight against cancer.

What does SafeVite contain and why?

Using the most current references and studies, our research team has focused on vitamins that can be safely recommended for all cancer patients.

Examples are:

 • D deficiency is widespread and frequently seen in patients receiving cancer treatments including colon and breast cancer patients.
 • B6 (pyridoxine) — Likely protects or mitigates the nerve damage by chemotherapeutic agents and possibly targeted agents that are often used to treat lymphoma, breast, colon, lung, sarcoma and myeloma (and other cancers). B6 is associated with lower risk of hormone positive breast cancer and likely helpful in colon and pancreatic cancer.
 • B12 is deficient in many types of cancer including breast cancer and multiple myeloma. B12 deficiency often results from deficiency of the protein intrinsic factor produced by the parietal cell in the stomach and thus frequently present in cancer patients and likely requires a very high dose in order to be absorbed by passive diffusion. B12 based on homocysteine alterations likely mitigates bone turnover and bone fracture risk.

What does SafeVite avoid and why?

Based on the most credible research available, SafeVite’s Cancer specialists have concluded that it is appropriate to avoid some vitamins from use in order to maximize your body’s fight against Cancer.

 • Calcium – One out of every four cancer patients will have significantly elevated calcium levels at some time in their life. Although calcium may be necessary for certain patients (like those on bone strengthening agents) it is best to avoid added calcium until confirmed with your doctor what amounts are appropriate.
 • Zinc – Though Zinc can specifically help with taste alterations due to radiation damage in oral cavity; it could mitigate the curative effects of this treatment. This is currently still being studied. For now likely best to avoid since its known benefits are limited to this specific situation and it definitely leads to copper deficiency.
 • E & A – Vitamins E and A, beta-carotene and selenium definitely interfere with potentially curative chemotherapy and radiation treatments while surprisingly seem to not be helpful in cancer prevention or possibly harmful in the development of cancers like lung cancer or prostate cancer.

The post Misinformation about Cancer as well as Vitamins appeared first on 4CancerWellness.

When Cancer becomes a part of your life whether it’s you or someone you know, patients and family look for insights and information on how best to cope and cure the cancer, often with limited past cancer experience. Understandably there is an immediate collaboration between family and friends, searching the Internet for answers and no doubt finding a mind numbing volume of preventions, treatments and cures.

Those sources may be well intended, but it is near impossible to differentiate what is real. It is important to start your research with well-respected organizations where you can rely on the information.

Some of the most respected organizations include the American Cancer Society, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, each providing excellent patient resources like CANCER.NET and NCCN.COM. Note, this should not be misconstrued as a comprehensive list, but rather a good place to start.

When it comes to information, beyond looking at the source, we need to see if the claims being made are logical. If a product claims to be good for every disease from diabetes, cancer and blood pressure or a product is great because it’s ‘all natural’ or the only product that can cure cancer; buyer beware.

This is not to say that wellness, healthy living, nutrition and exercise are not vitally important, however, it’s also important to acknowledge the false claim that traditional medicine can’t cure cancer, especially when the majority of cancer is currently being cured. Some advice sounds logical enough, but with more insight is actually misguided by being completely inaccurate, hiding under the mask of what at face value sounds natural or better because it’s alternative.

It’s just like ‘all vitamins are good for you’ and ‘more vitamins are better’.

Speaking of Vitamins, when it comes to Cancer there are many excellent resources, but oncologists often worry about overstated or false claims, fearing their patients may not focus on the important lifesaving or even curative treatments. It is also important to recognize oncologists today cannot cure all cancer patients, which unfortunately makes these patients understandably vulnerable to false claims and the latest quick cures.

This reality though should not negate the importance of vitamins. As we often say at 4CancerWellness, “Vitamins seem to lose priority when addressing curative treatments, but clearly there are appropriate vitamins and doses along with recognition that it’s best to avoid some vitamins as we truly address wellness in our cancer patients”. It is for this reason that SafeVite was developed, as there’s a lot of misinformation out there, especially when it comes to vitamins.

So, to reiterate; common misinformation includes; “vitamins are not important when it comes to cancer patients”. “Vitamins are natural and harmless”. “Vitamins levels aren’t affected by cancer treatments and elevated vitamin levels are never life-threatening”. “No vitamin addresses cancer treatment toxicities”, and the strange comment; “what vitamins you take do not matter”. Even stranger; “all vitamins are safe and ‘more’ must be better”. These comments are not wellness and definitely not wise. When it comes to cancer, choose SafeVite as a daily multivitamin and be wise.

When it comes to cancer, larger doses of vitamins can indeed be harmful.

We live in a society that often thinks, if something is helpful, then more must be better. When it comes to vitamins, this is not logical and definitely not true.

There are some basic rules regarding too much of certain vitamins. Doses near or at the recommended daily allowances are indeed recommended for a reason. Most vitamins (though not all) are often risky when taken at excessively high doses.

In other words, Vitamin A, D, E, K, Calcium and even B1, B2, B6 can carry this risk. This is particularly true of fat soluble vitamins. Vitamin A, D, E and K when taken in larger doses, lead to accumulation in fatty tissues like the liver, instead of being eliminated in the urine like water soluble vitamins. Expensive urine is not so dangerous, but killing your liver is not a good idea.

Vitamin E may be the most harmful when taken in large doses clearly leading to liver death, then patient death. A Small enough dose is perfectly safe. In fact, nearly all observational studies suggest an increased risk of death when taking even a moderately larger doses of Vitamin E.

Vitamin D can lead to a syndrome term Hypervitaminosis D. This often leads to high calcium levels with nausea, altered thinking and dehydration. Keep in mind some people need more Vitamin D, but often it’s not a good idea to take more than what is necessary.

The same goes for vitamin A toxicity, called Hypervitaminosis A, leading to possibly abdominal pain, nausea, irritability and drowsiness, visual disturbance and bone pain.

Vitamin B6 in larger doses above 100 mg daily, increases nerve toxicities while at lower doses is often considered helpful if nerves have been damaged from other agents or reasons (like certain chemotherapy drugs).

Given current literature, B12 is the safest product at large doses. In fact, it often requires very large doses to achieve, thru passive absorption, adequate B12 levels. If the intrinsic factor levels are quite low (this protein is normally produced in the stomach and must be adequate to absorb the low doses of B12 listed at the recommended daily allowances). Higher doses of this vitamin may be safe, even desired if this protein is low, as often found in cancer patients those previously getting treatment for cancer.

So, can vitamins be harmful if you take high doses? Clearly the answer is yes. Especially when taking fat soluble vitamins. It is definitely best to limit these vitamins and sometimes even avoid them regarding a cancer patient. If you would like to learn about a daily multivitamin that takes into account what we have been discussing, visit our wellness shop.

A cancer cell originates from a normal cell with genetic changes that occur over time. At first, it simply develops genetic changes that allow it to become dysplastic (a pre-cancer cell) and needs other genetic changes to survive (be immortalized) outside its intended site of origin and able to obtain its own nutrition, too often relying on our own nutrients/energy/calories. This requires significant further mutations or rearrangements in a cancer cell genome.

Fortunately, by definition, it’s a very abnormal cell and does not tolerate highly damaging doses of radiation or cytotoxic (cell killing) drugs like chemotherapy. Chemotherapy interrupts or essentially kills the cancer cell and fortunately leads to high cure rates in Hodgins Lymphoma, Testicular Cancer, Acute Leukemia as well as significant improved cures in life-threatening Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma… to name just a few examples. Knowing that cancer cells can be killed and we are curing cancers with radiation and chemotherapy, this should lead to an obvious question.

When it comes to vitamins, are there certain vitamins we should avoid during cancer treatments?

Fortunately, there are well conducted research studies and published articles clearly suggesting specific vitamins should be avoided with cancer treatments 4. These vitamins mitigate oxidative stressors and likely circumvent the killing of cancer cells with radiation, chemotherapy. In simple terms, we should want a very abnormal cell (cancer cell) to be killed. It needs to be gone, out of us.

There continues to be extensive research into the preventative value of these ‘oxidative vitamins’ though at present current research questions the role of these vitamins even in the preventative setting 1,3,5 . If treating cancer or if having prior cancer and possibly in the future needing cancer treatments again, it is strongly suggested we avoid these types of vitamins.
